Maoming ( Chinese  茂名 市 , Pinyin Màomíng Shì ) is a district-free city in the predominantly Yue- speaking province of Guangdong in the People's Republic of China . The administrative area of ​​Maoming has an area of ​​11,459 km² and approximately 6.123 million inhabitants (end of 2016). 1.03 million people live in the actual urban settlement area of ​​Maoming (2010 census). The Maoming dialect of the Yue belongs to the Gaoyang dialect group (高 陽 方言 片), which is mainly distributed in Yangjiang and the Leizhou Peninsula .

Administrative structure

At the county level, Maoming is made up of two boroughs and three independent cities . These are:

  • (1) Maonan district (茂南区), 487 km², 710,000 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
  • (2 + 6) Dianbai district (电 白区), 2,275 km², 1.71 million inhabitants (end of 2004);
  • (3) City Huazhou (化州市), 2,354 square kilometers, 1.42 million inhabitants (end of 2003);
  • (4) Xinyi City (信宜市), 3,081 km², 1.24 million inhabitants (end of 2002);
  • (5) Gaozhou City (高 州市), 3,276 km², 1.50 million inhabitants.
