The Leizhou Peninsula ( Chinese 雷州 半島 / 雷州 半岛 , Pinyin Léizhōu Bàndǎo ) is a peninsula in the southwestern part of the Chinese province of Guangdong in southern China . It is one of the three major Chinese peninsulas. Its extension in north-south direction is approx. 140 km, in east-west direction approx. 70 km. To the east of it lies the South China Sea , to the west the Gulf of Tonking and to the south the 30 km wide Hainan Strait ( Qiongzhou Haixia ), which separates it from the island province of Hainan . The largest city is Zhanjiang . There are the Litang- Zhanjiang (Li-Zhan Railway 黎湛 铁路) and Zhanjiang- Hai'an Port ( Yue-Hai Railway ) railway lines .
There are 76 volcanoes on the peninsula, most of which are extinct.
