The popular tourist destination Zhuhai ( Chinese 珠海 市 , Pinyin Zhūhǎi Shì - "Pearl Sea City") is a district-free city in the Chinese province of Guangdong with a total area of 1,724 km² and 1,614,200 inhabitants. The urban area includes around 6,000 km² of water with numerous islands. For this reason, Zhuhai is also known in China as the “city of a hundred islands” ( 百 島 之 市 / 百 岛 之 市 , Bǎidǎo zhī Shì ).
General
Zhuhai borders Zhongshan and Jiangmen in the north and the Macau Special Administrative Region in the south . The border to Macau can be crossed on foot via the busy Gongbei Port (拱北 街道) in the Xiangzhou district. In 2013 over 99 million entries and exits were registered there. Since it was designated a special economic zone in 1982, Zhuhai has increasingly developed into an economic and tourist location. The economic importance of Zhuhai was expanded in 2015 through the integration of Hengqin Island into the new Guangdong Free Trade Zone.
In 2014, Zhuhai was selected as the most livable and sustainable city in China by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the management consultancy McKinsey. The city's air quality is well above the Chinese average. Four golf courses (two more under construction), a race track , amusement parks and more than 100 islands, in combination with comparatively low prices, make Zhuhai a popular tourist destination in China. Numerous business people from Hong Kong and Macau use Zhuhai as a weekend home.

The city of Zhuhai also administers four national economic zones: the Hengqin Pilot Free Trade Zone (横琴 新区), the Zhuhai National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone (珠海 国家 高新技术 产业 开发区), the Zhuhai Gaolan Port Economic Zone (珠海 经济技术 开发区) and the Wanshan Marine Development Experimental Zone (万 山 海洋 开发 试验 区).

Developed economically, Zhuhai offers investors a solid foundation for building production facilities. A decisive factor here is that Zhuhai is a special economic zone and also includes a free trade zone . The industry in Zhuhai is particularly focused on electronics manufacturing, (general) aviation, chemistry and petrochemistry, medical technology and marine technology. Well-known Chinese companies from Zhuhai include Gree (the world's largest manufacturer of air conditioning), CAIGA (subsidiary of the state-owned AVIC and manufacturer of business jets and amphibious aircraft), United Laboratories (China's largest manufacturer of antibiotics) and Guangdong By-Health Biotechnology (China's largest Manufacturer of dietary supplements). Around 40 German companies and more than 50 Fortune Global 500 companies, including Bosch , MTU Aero Engines , BP , Shell , Epcos , Philips , Canon , Harting and Semikron, have settled in Zhuhai. In 2014, FDI totaled $ 1.9 billion.
The construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge was completed on September 27, 2016. The opening should take place in 2018 [obsolete] .
To further internationalize the location, the city's commercial office has been operating a representative office for Europe in Karlsruhe , Germany, since 2014 .
tourism
There are currently 20 five-star hotels in Zhuhai as well as some international hotel chains such as Novotel and Holiday Inn. The Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Center (Zhuhai CEC), which consists of exhibition halls, restaurants, hotels, meeting rooms, an opera house and a ballroom, is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015 [obsolete] . Thanks to its convenient location on the island of Hengqin, the CEC can be reached in 10 minutes from Macau. With the completion of the Überseebrücke, the travel time Hong Kong - Zhuhai will be reduced to just half an hour.
Zhuhai is the venue for a number of events: China's largest air show, the China Airshow, and an international circus festival take place in Zhuhai every year. In addition, the WTA decided to hold the WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai in Hengqin in January 2015 . The high-ranking international tournament will take place for the first time from 2–8. November 2015 [obsolete] . The Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, the largest aquarium in the world, opened in Zhuhai in 2013 and had 10 million visitors in 2014.
The symbol of the city of Zhuhai is the statue of the "Fisher Girl" on the coast of the Xiangzhou district. One of the tourist highlights is the New Yuan Ming Palace (圆明 新 园 / 圓明 新 aff), created in 1997, which is a partial reconstruction of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing, which was destroyed in 1860. The park covers 1.39 km² and includes an 80,000 m² lake. The Baojingwan site (宝镜 湾 遗址 / 寶鏡 灣 遺址, Baojingwan yizhi) located in Baojingwan on Gaolan Dao Island in Zhuhai County and the residence of the Chen Fang family (陈芳 家宅 / 陳芳 家宅, Chen Fang jiazhai) are on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China .

The climate is subtropical , the city is hit by an average of 2 to 3 typhoons from June to September . The average temperature in January is 14.5 ° C and in July 28.6 ° C. The amount of precipitation per year is 1964 mm per m². The average humidity is 80%.
traffic
Zhuhai has its own airport with national connections. B. to Shanghai . There are four international airports (Macau, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen) within a radius of 100 km. From Jiuzhou Port in the city center, ferries connect the city with Hong Kong Airport, Hong Kong Island, Guangzhou and Shenzhen . The journey time is about an hour.
In addition to Jiuzhou Port, Zhuhai has six other ports, including Gaolan Port in the southwest of the city. Gaolan Port the largest deep-sea port in the western Pearl River Delta and thus one of the most important ports in southern China for bulk goods. There is also a terminal for liquefied natural gas there . An hourly high-speed train connects Zhuhai directly with the provincial capital, Guangzhou .
Numerous motorways and expressways such as the G94 and G4W connect Zhuhai with the other metropolises of the Pearl River Delta . The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will complement Zhuhai's extensive road network from 2017.
The first line of the Zhuhai tram was opened on June 13, 2017 , a total of three lines are planned.
education
Zhuhai has ten universities and over 145,000 students, making it the second largest university city in Guangdong Province. Zhuhai's universities include Tsinghua University and Sun Yat-sen University , which are among the top ten universities in the country. While the former has only a small branch in Zhuhai, the latter has built a campus that is larger than all three branches of the University of Guangzhou combined. German students also study there at the Design Factory International. Other universities which operate a campus in Zhuhai, include: The University of Macau , the Jilin University , the Beijing Normal University and the United International College, a joint campus of the Hong Kong Baptist University and Beijing Normal University .
