The Sun Yat-sen University ( Chinese  中山大學  /  中山大学 , Pinyin Zhōngshān Dàxué ) is a university in the Chinese province of Guangdong . It was founded in 1924 by Sun Yat-sen , the Chinese revolutionary leader and the first president of the Republic of China . The university is considered to be the best in southern China and one of the top ten in the People's Republic of China. It has the largest affiliated hospital system in China.

Lingnan College

history

Sun Yat-sen University was founded in 1924 by Sun Yat-sen. It was initially called Guangdong National University ( 國立 廣東 大學  /  国立 广东大学 , Guólì Guǎngdōng Dàxué ). After Sun's death in 1925, the university was renamed Sun Yat-sen University in 1926. It was initially located in the Dongshan district, where the Guangdong Museum was later built (now Wenming Street). In 1933, the university campus moved to Shipai ( 石牌 街道 ) Street in Tianhe District . In the early 1950s, the faculties of art and natural sciences at the state-run Sun Yat-sen University were merged with those of the private Lingnan University ( 嶺南 大學  /  岭南 大学 ) and a few smaller institutions and moved to what was then Lingnan University Relocated to Kangle District (now Haizhu ).

During the Cultural Revolution , the Sun Yat-sen University also went through a phase from 1966 to 1971 in which teaching was completely stopped and the teaching staff at cadre schools in north Guangdong was transferred. Between 1971 and 1978 the teaching staff was slowly allowed to return to the university to teach workers, soldiers and farmers. It was not until 1977 that the university began to admit students again only after an entrance examination. After the start of the reform and opening-up policy, it was one of the first further educational institutions to be allowed to award master's and doctoral degrees.

In 2001 the previously independent Sun-Yat-sen University of Medicine ( 中山 醫科大學  /  中山 医科大学 ) was merged with the Sun-Yat-sen University.

Locations

South campus

After the merger with Lingnan College , the Sun Yat-sen University campus was relocated to Kangle Yuan ( 康 樂園  /  康 乐园 ). The Lingnan College campus was there before. The campus in Kangle Yuan is called the South Campus. It is located in Haizhu , a district in southern Guangzhou, and is 1.17 km² in size. In the late 1990s, more than 20 faculties were located here.

In 2000, a second campus was opened in Tangjia, Zhuhai City . Students in most faculties spend the first two years of their bachelor's degree in Zhuhai and the third and fourth years on the south campus in Guangzhou. The campus in Zhuhai is by far the largest campus of the university with 3.48 km². However, the area largely consists of green spaces. There is a larger area to the west of the campus that is not used at all. The generous use of land is due to the fact that the city of Zhuhai provided the land free of charge. The architecture of the campus in Zhuhai is striking. The building in which the library and administration are located should resemble an open book in shape. There is only one building in the campus where classes take place. This lies between two hills and is over 500 meters long.

North Campus

In 2001, Sun Yat-sen University of Medicine was merged with Sun Yat-sen University. This created the north campus. At 0.39 km² it is the smallest campus.

East Campus

East Campus

In 2004 the east campus in Daxuecheng ( 大學 城  /  大学 城  - "University City ") was founded. This is located in the Panyu district and, at 1.13 km², is almost as large as the south campus. Similar to the university library in Zhuhai, the one on the east campus is reproduced in the shape of an open book.
