The Zhuhai International Circuit is a permanent race track opened in November 1996 in Zhuhai , in the Chinese province of Guangdong .

history

The start-and-finish straight

In 1993, the Hong Kong Automobile Association held China's first road race in Zhuhai. The event drew 100,000 visitors, a number that was to increase in the following years, thanks in part to its proximity to Hong Kong and Macau . The Zhuhai International Circuit was opened in November 1996 as the first permanent race track in China. Since then, Zhuhai has established itself as a motorsport center in southern China, and several national series regularly hold events there.

Like the Australian Formula 1 track in Adelaide, the track is operated by Kinhill Engineers Pty Ltd. designed. In 2004 the system was revised by the German civil engineer Hermann Tilke .

Events

The first race on the new track was a run of the international BPR Global GT Series . Since then, races of the Asian Le Mans Series or the A1GP series have taken place. The most famous event is the 6 hours of Zhuhai .

The track appeared in the provisional Formula 1 calendar in 1999, but the FIA did not consider the circuit suitable for Formula 1. The first Chinese Grand Prix did not take place until 2004 on the newly built Shanghai International Circuit .

Attempts to lure the Super GT or Champ Car to Zhuhai have also failed so far.

Routing

The track has FIA level II approval and is driven clockwise . A 4.3 km lap leads through 14 bends, nine right and five left bends. The original planning provided for 16 bends with another chicane in front of hairpin 7. At the end of the 900 m long and 14 m wide start-finish straight , top speeds of almost 300 km / h can be achieved.
