Shantou ( Chinese 汕頭 市 / 汕头 市 , Pinyin Shàntóu shì , Jyutping Saan 3 tau 4 Si 5 , obsolete according to Post Swatow ) is a district-free city in the province of Guangdong in the People's Republic of China . Shantou is located on the South China Sea on the border with Fujian Province . The Tropic of Cancer runs through the city. An enlarged globe is set up as a reference at the following point: ⊙ . This is outside the city center. Shantou has a subtropical - maritime climate with an average temperature of 21.3 ° C. The administrative area of the city has an area of 2,064.4 km² and a population of 5.065 million.
Administrative structure
At the county level, Shantou is made up of six boroughs and one county. These are:
- (1) Jinping District (金 平 区), 108.71 km², approx. 738,500 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
- (2) District Haojiang (濠江区), 134.88 square kilometers, about 272,500 inhabitants;
- (3) Longhu District (龙湖 区), 103.58 km², approx. 320,500 inhabitants;
- (4) District Chaoyang (潮阳区), 667.6 square kilometers, about 1,413,400 inhabitants;
- (5) Chaonan district (潮南区), 596.42 km², approx. 1,100,600 inhabitants;
- (6) Chenghai District (澄海 区), 345.23 km², approx. 697,900 inhabitants;
- (7) Nan'ao County (南澳 县), 108 km², 70,000 inhabitants, main town: Houzhai Municipality (后 宅镇).

Shantou is an important port and industrial city in southern China and one of the country's first four special economic zones .
Like the neighboring Chaozhou, Shantou has special ties to Thailand , as a large part of the Chinese population there comes from the Shantou area.
The asteroid (3139) Shantou has been named after the city since 1990.
