Teresa Hsu Chih ( Chinese : 許哲; * July 7, 1898 in Shantou ; † December 7, 2011 in Singapore ) was a social worker. She was known under the name of Singapore's Mother Teresa in recognition of her lifelong active dedication to helping the elderly and destitute.

life and work

The retired nurse was the founder of the non-profit “Heart to Heart Service” and the “Home for the Aged Sick”, one of the first accommodations for the old and the sick Singapore people. She was a social worker in China and Paraguay and was a nurse in England before returning to Singapore to set up similar nonprofit services since 1961. Even in old age she was still actively involved in charitable work. She had spent almost all of her savings on providing food and shelter to the poor and the elderly. She herself lived a simple and humble lifestyle. In 2005, she received the Singapore Government's Special Recognition Award in recognition of her contribution to the country.

Her alleged date of birth and age is doubtful and has never been independently verified.
