A total of 40 quota places are available for the competitions in rhythmic gymnastics at the 2020 Summer Olympics (26 in individual and 14 in group competitions). The Japanese delegation is entitled to one place. Only women take part in the competitions. The quota places won by the athletes belong to the respective National Olympic Committee . In individual competitions, a maximum of two athletes may compete per NOK, in a group one team per NOK. All athletes must be born before December 31, 2004.

Qualification takes place on the one hand via the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships 2018 (group) 2019 (individual and group) and via the individual continental championships. Furthermore, the three best athletes of the World Cup series 2020 will receive a quota place in the singles. In addition, the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) invited an athlete to receive a quota place in the individual competition.
