A total of 172 quota places are available for the badminton competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics , 86 per gender. The qualification period was from April 29, 2019 to April 26, 2020. Due to the postponement of the games due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the period has been extended to April 29, 2021.

The qualification takes place via the world rankings . As of April 29, 2021, a total of 16 quota places in each double competition and 38 quota places in each individual competition will be awarded according to the following criteria:

  • Singles:
    • Places 1 to 16: A maximum of 2 players per nation can receive a quota place, provided they are both placed in the top 16.
    • From 17th place: The remaining quota places are allocated according to the placements. A nation may receive a maximum of one quota place.
  • Double:
    • Places 1 to 8: A maximum of 2 couples per nation can receive a quota place, provided they are both placed in the top 8.
    • From place 9: The remaining quota places are allocated according to the placements. A nation may receive a maximum of one quota place.

Each of the five continental federations is guaranteed at least one quota place in each singles and doubles competition (this is known as the Continental Representation Place System). If this is not met by the selection method described above, the top-ranked player or the top-ranked pair of the respective continent will qualify. A nation can only qualify for a maximum of competitions using the Continental Representation Place system. If a nation qualifies for more than two competitions via the Continental Representation Place system, the delegation must choose which quota places to use and which to reject, this free place is given to the next best placed player or the next best placed pair of the Continental Association.

As the host country, Japan is eligible to participate in any single with one player. However, more than two players can be admitted if they meet the qualification requirements.

For every player who qualifies for both a double and a single competition, an unused quota place will be allocated to the next best athlete in the individual competitions on the world rankings from April 30, 2020. This ensures that a total of 86 men and 86 women will take part.
