For the 2020 Olympic football tournaments, 16 teams can qualify for men and 12 for women.

Men

At its meeting on September 14, 2017, the FIFA Organizing Committee decided on the allocation of qualification places.

1The North and Central American Qualifier was originally scheduled to run from March 20 to April 1, 2020, but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Asia

The participants of the Asian association AFC will be determined at the U-23 Asian Championship in Thailand from January 8th to 26th, 2020. In addition to hosts Japan , the top three teams will qualify for the Olympics. Should Japan finish in the top three, the fourth-placed would move up.

Africa

For the African federation CAF was U-23 African Nations Cup in Egypt significantly, which took place from 8 to 22 November of 2019. In addition to the two finalists Egypt and Ivory Coast, South Africa also qualified for the Olympics as the winner of the game for third place. The following eight teams took part in the U-23 Africa Cup:

Europe

The qualifying tournament UEFA was the U-21 European Championship from 16 to 30 June 2019 Italy and San Marino . The following teams qualified for the finals:

North and Central America

Two teams from the North and Central American association CONCACAF will qualify via a qualifying tournament that will be played from March 24th to April 1st, 2020.

Oceania

The starting position of the oceanic federation OFC was no longer determined via the soccer tournament of the Pacific Games , but rather played out via the U-23 Oceania Championship, which was held for the first time in 2019 on the Fiji islands. New Zealand has qualified for the Olympic Games as the winner of the tournament. The following 11 teams took part in the tournament:

South America

The South American association CONMEBOL will no longer determine its two places for the Olympic tournament via the U-20 South American Championship , but instead play a qualifying tournament in Colombia from January 15 to February 2, 2020 . The following ten nations will take part in this tournament:

Asia

The starting places due to the Asian association AFC will be played in a qualification tournament in four rounds. The first round took place in November 2018 and the second round in April 2019. The third round will be held in January and February 2020 and the fourth round in March 2020. In addition to hosts Japan , the two fourth-round winners will qualify for the Olympic Games. Australia succeeded in doing this in March 2020. The last place will be played between China and South Korea. The two games have been postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are currently scheduled to take place in June 2020.

Africa

The direct starting position of the African association CAF was determined in a qualification tournament . Zambia qualified as the best team directly and for the first time for the Olympic tournament, while the runner-up Cameroon still has the chance to prevail in two play-off games against Chile , the runner-up in the South American qualification. The following nations took part:

Note: Teams marked with "*" were withdrawn or suspended by FIFA before the tournament started (Sierra Leone).

Europe

The three best European teams from the European association UEFA qualified for the 2019 World Cup in France . If several eligible teams had been eliminated in the same round, a qualifying tournament would have been played between them, as in 2016. The following nine teams from Europe took part in the World Cup:

England, the Netherlands and Sweden were the only European teams to reach the semi-finals and since the British associations had agreed in advance to send a team together if England would be among the three best European teams, the three European participants are certain.

North and Central America

The United States and Canada were identified as representing the North and Central American Confederation CONCACAF at a qualifying tournament in February 2020. The following nations took part:

Oceania

The starting place of the oceanic association OFC was determined via the Oceania Championship for women from November 18 to December 1, 2018 in New Caledonia . The following eight nations took part:

However, Tahiti and New Caledonia had no right to the starting place at the Olympic Games, as they do not have their own National Olympic Committee.

In the final, defending champions New Zealand beat the Fiji Islands 8-0 . During the tournament the New Zealanders did not concede a single goal.

South America

At the South American Women's Championship in Chile in 2018 , the starting positions of the South American association CONMEBOL were played out. The following teams took part:

In the final round, Brazil was the sovereign group winner and qualified as the first team for the Olympic tournament. The second-placed team, Chile , still has the chance to prevail in two play-off games against Cameroon, the second in the Africa qualification.
