A total of 32 quota places are available for the synchronized swimming competitions at the 2020 Olympic Summer Games (10 in a group and 22 in a duet).

The winning nations of the five continental championships were given a quota place for the group competition. Asia is an exception here, represented by the Japanese delegation as the host. In addition, the two best nations of the 2019 World Championships were also given quota places. The last three places will finally be awarded in January 2020 at an Olympic qualification tournament. All qualified nations are also automatically qualified for the duet. Here, too, five more places were awarded to the best nation on a continent. The last seven starting places are to be awarded at an Olympic qualification tournament in March 2021.
