For the competitions in the modern pentathlon at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, a total of 72 quota places are provided (36 per gender). For both men and women, a maximum of two athletes per nation are allowed to participate. As the host nation, Japan is entitled to a starting place in both competitions.

The qualification phase will take place between February and September 2019. The winner of the UIPM World Cup finals 2019 will receive a starting place. 20 places will be awarded by the championships of the respective continents: one each from Africa and Oceania, five from Asia, eight from Europe and five from America. Each nation may only have one starting place.

At the World Championships in 2019 and 2021, three places will be awarded to the best placed athletes. The remaining eight places will be awarded on the basis of the world rankings. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the 2020 World Championships, which were originally supposed to take place from May 23 to 31, have been postponed. A new date was planned for autumn 2020 in the Mexican city of Cancún . However, the world championship was canceled due to the pandemic. Now the last quota places at the World Championships in 2021 in the Belarusian capital Minsk are to be awarded.
