A total of 128 starting places (64 for each gender) are available for the archery competitions at the 2020 Olympic Summer Games . The qualification criteria were published by the World Archery Federation in March 2018.
Each National Olympic Committee (NOK) can provide a maximum of six athletes, three per gender. NOKs who have qualified for the team competition are also entitled to three starting places in the respective individual competition. There are 12 starting places in the respective team competitions for both men and women. Thus 72 athletes (36 of each gender) are already qualified for the individual through their participation in the team competition. All other NOKs are only entitled to one quota place in the individual competitions for men and women.
Six starting places are reserved for Japan as the host nation. Four more are decided by a three-person commission. The remaining 118 places are then allocated through a qualification process in which the archers can get quota places for their respective NOKs, but the federation can decide for itself which athlete fills this place.
There are no qualifying tournaments for the mixed betting cup before the 2020 games. The qualification is carried out using the ranking lists at the beginning of the games. For every NOK of which at least one man and one woman has qualified, the points of the top-rated man and the top-rated woman are added up in the ranking list. The 16 best NOKs qualify for the competition.
From the start of the World Archery Championships in June 2019 until the start of the games, the following qualification criteria must have been met by the participating athletes in an official competition of the World Archery Federation over 70 m:
- Men: 640 points
- Women: 605 points
