The XVI. Pacific Games were held in Apia , Samoa from July 7th to July 20th, 2019 . After 1983 and 2007 , Samoa hosted the Pacific Games for the third time . The games were initially awarded to Nukuʻalofa in Tonga , which withdrew from the right to host in May 2017.

The games were played in 26 sports.

Award

Nukuʻalofa, Tonga and Papeete in French Polynesia ( Tahiti ) had applied to host the 2019 Pacific Games by mid-2012 . In October 2012, Tonga was awarded the contract. This was justified primarily by the fact that the country had never hosted the Pacific Games before. On May 15, 2017, the Prime Minister of Tonga announced that the right to host the event could not be exercised due to financial circumstances.

French Polynesia, Guam and Samoa applied to be awarded again . Samoa ultimately won the bid.
