Papeete ( Tahitian : Pape'ete) is the capital of French Polynesia and is located on the island of Tahiti , which belongs to the Society Islands .
In 2012 the population of the city itself was 25,769 people, while the entire agglomeration had 162,006 inhabitants.
Papeete is the seat of the Archdiocese of Papeete .
City structure
The agglomeration of Papeete includes nine parishes, three in the east and four in the southwest of the city as well as the island of Moorea. The nine municipalities from northeast to southwest:
The actual city of Papeete is divided into 22 districts. In 2007, a total of 26,017 inhabitants were recorded there; in 2012 it was 25,769.
history
The missionary William Crook was the first European to settle in what is now Papeete in 1818. The Tahitian Queen Pomaré IV then also settled there and raised Papeete to her capital before 1830. Papeete became a regional center of trade and transportation. After the colonization by France with the establishment of a protectorate in 1842, Papeete remained the capital. A fire destroyed large parts of the village in 1884, and a cyclone also caused great damage in 1906.
On September 22, 1914, German cruisers of the East Asia Squadron shelled the port of Papeete.
Papeete International Airport opened in 1961. In September 1995, violent clashes broke out for three days over the French nuclear tests on the Mururoa Atoll, which almost led to the destruction of the airport.

The airline Air Tahiti Nui has its administrative headquarters in the Immeuble Dexter office building in Papeete.
Sports
The Stade Pater Te Hono Nui , the city's sports stadium, can hold 15,000 spectators. The Oceania Football Championship was held there in 2000 .

With reference to the city
Herman Melville was a convict in Papeete from 1842. His experiences there formed the basis of his novella Omoo . Paul Gauguin traveled to Papeete in 1891 and never returned to France except for the years 1893 to 1895. Also, Robert Louis Stevenson and Henry Adams spent some time in 1891 in Papeete.
