Hubert Coppenrath (born October 18, 1930 in Papeete , Tahiti , French Polynesia ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus Archbishop of Papeete, French Polynesia.

family

Hubert Coppenrath's ancestors came from the Münster- based family of Joseph Heinrich Coppenrath , founder of Coppenrath Verlag . His grandfather Caspar Coppenrath (born May 10, 1849 in Munster; † 1906 during a trip home) had settled as a merchant in Tahiti and was married there to the Englishwoman Esther Bambridge. This marriage resulted in twelve children who left widespread offspring in Tahiti. His father was Clement Coppenrath (1888-1957), he was married to Martha Servant. Hubert Coppenrath is the younger brother of his immediate predecessor Archbishop Michel-Gaspard Coppenrath . His older brother Gérald Coppenrath (1922-2008) was from 1958 to 1962 French Senator for Tahiti.

Life

Hubert Coppenrath attended the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in French Issy-les-Moulineaux and studied theology at the Institut Catholique de Paris . He was ordained a priest on June 27, 1957 in Tahiti and was from 1959 to 1967 vicar in the cathedral of Papeete and pastor in Arue. From 1961 to 1971 he was director of Catholic education in Tahiti and from 1967 to 1997 pastor of Papeete Cathedral. In addition, from 1977 to 1997 he was in charge of deacon training and from 1989 to 1997 he was a member of the Curé des îles de l'Est . In 1993 he was appointed vicar general .

On November 21, 1997 Hubert Coppenrath was placed by Pope John Paul II at the side of the incumbent Archbishop of Papeete, his biological brother Michel-Gaspard Coppenrath , as coadjutor archbishop . The episcopal ordination donated by his brother on 21 February 1998 co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Noumea , Michel Marie Calvet SM , and the Bishop of Taiohae o Tefenuaenata , Guy Chevalier SSCC . With the age-related resignation of his brother on June 4, 1999, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Papeete.

On March 31, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. Hubert Coppenrath's request to resign from the office of Archbishop of Papeete for reasons of age. Coppenrath was until then a member of the French Bishops' Conference .
