Michel-Gaspard Coppenrath (born June 4, 1924 in Papeete , Tahiti , French Polynesia ; † August 16, 2008 there ) was Archbishop of Papeete, French Polynesia.

family

Michel Coppenrath's ancestors came from the Münster- based family of Joseph Heinrich Coppenrath , founder of Coppenrath Verlag . His grandfather Caspar Coppenrath (born May 10, 1849 in Münster, † 1906 during a trip home) had settled as a merchant in Tahiti and was married there to the Englishwoman Esther Bambridge. This marriage resulted in twelve children who left widespread offspring in Tahiti. His father was Clement Coppenrath (1888-1957) and was married to Martha Servant.

Michel Coppenrath is the older brother of his immediate successor Archbishop Hubert Coppenrath . His older brother Gérald Coppenrath (1922-2008) was from 1958 to 1962 French Senator for Tahiti.

Life

Michel Coppenrath grew up in Tahiti and later went to France. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1954 in Poitiers . In addition to theology and philosophy, he studied civil law and received his doctorate in canon law .

In 1968 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Titular Archbishop of Tigisi in Numidia and placed alongside the incumbent Archbishop of Papeete Paul-Laurent-Jean-Louis Mazé as Coadjutor Archbishop . The episcopal ordination donated to him on June 3, 1968 Archbishop Paul-Laurent-Jean-Louis Mazé SSCC itself; Co - consecrators were Pierre-Paul-Émile Martin SM , Archbishop of Nouméa , and Louis-Bertrand Tirilly SSCC, Bishop of Taiohae , Nuku Hiva . After the death of Archbishop Mazé, he became Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Papeete in 1973 .

His age-related resignation was granted in 1999 by John Paul II . He was succeeded by his brother Hubert Coppenrath.

Coppenrath was involved in his homeland in many ways and was a valued discussion partner for all politicians and population groups.
