The Archdiocese of Papeete ( Latin Archidioecesis Papeetensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in French Polynesia with the metropolitan seat of Papeete in Tahiti . The archbishopric includes the Society Islands , the Austral Islands and the Tuamotu Archipelago (including the Gambier Islands ). Occasionally, for historical reasons, the neighboring British Pitcairn Islands are also counted as part of the diocese; However, no Catholics live there.

history

The territory of the South Sea Islands prefecture was established on June 8, 1833 with the Breve In sublimi by Gregory XVI. divided into the Vicariate Apostolic Eastern Ocean and Western Oceania .

The Cook Islands were ceded by the Apostolic Vicariate of Tahiti on November 27, 1922 by Pope Pius XI. intended for the independent Apostolic Prefecture of the Cook Islands and Manihiki . On November 27, 1966 the Vicariate was by Pope Paul VI. raised to an archbishopric . The first archbishop was Paul-Laurent-Jean-Louis Mazé SSCC .

As a suffragan , the diocese Taiohae o Tefenuaenata is assigned to the archdiocese of Papeete.
