The Archdiocese of Saint-Pierre and Fort-de-France ( Latin Archidioecesis Arcis Gallicae et S. Petri o Martinicensis ) is an archbishopric of the Roman Catholic Church located in Martinique , France . The metropolitan seat is Fort-de-France , with around 90,000 inhabitants also one of the largest cities in the Lesser Antilles .
history
In 1850 the diocese was named the Diocese of Martinique by Pope Pius IX. founded and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Bordeaux as a suffragan; the first bishop was Etienne Jean François Le Herpeur . In 1967 the diocese was established by Pope Paul VI. raised to the Archdiocese of Saint-Pierre et Fort-de-France. The first archbishop was Henri-Marie-François Varin de la Brunelière CSSp.
As a suffragan assigned to the Archdiocese of Saint-Pierre et Fort-de-France is the Diocese of Basse-Terre et Pointe-à-Pitre and the Diocese Cayenne .
