The Jesuits and Capuchins had carried out pastoral care and missions since 1643, but left the colony again in 1763. The work of Blessed Anne-Marie Javouhey , founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny , who built a settlement in 1828 at the instigation of the French government, was important. The Spiritans also worked in the colony from 1816.
On January 10, 1933, the Apostolic Prefecture was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate . On February 29, 1956, the Vicariate Apostolic of French Guiana Cayenne was raised to the diocese. The diocese is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Saint-Pierre et Fort-de-France as a suffragan .
