The Saint-Sauveur Cathedral is the main church in the city of Cayenne and the largest church in the French overseas department of French Guiana . The church dedicated to the Savior (French: Saint Sauver ) or Redeemer was built between 1825 and 1833 in the neoclassical style . It has been the seat of the Cayenne Diocese since 1933 .

history

In 1823, the priest Nicolas Guiller and Pierre Bernard Milius , French governor in Guiana, decided to replace the Saint-Nicolas church with a new building. Work on the new Heilandskirche, which was erected in hewn stone and masonry, began in 1825 and continued until 1833. The two-story wooden church tower also dates from this period. The altar, the pulpit and the confessional of the chapel of the penitentiary on the Ilet la Mère were moved here in 1876.

In 1933 the church was elevated to a cathedral and it was consecrated by Pierre-Marie Gourtay , the first bishop of Cayenne, on November 9, 1934.

In the years 1952/54, the church was completed on its east side under the direction of the civil engineer Victor Toubi and reinforced with a polygon made of reinforced concrete. The windows, the floor, the chairs and the ceiling were replaced.
