The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Marseille ( Latin Archidioecesis massiliensis ) is in the south of France located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in France , based in Marseille . It covers the area of the arrondissement of Marseille .

history
Allegedly, in the 1st century , a bishopric was founded in Marseille . The first bishop known by name is Oresius in 314. In 417 the diocese of Marseille becomes part of the ecclesiastical province of Arles . The Saint-Victor Monastery was the residence of the Bishops of Marseille from 750 to 960 . The Notre Dame de la Major cathedral was built around 1150 in the Provencal Romanesque style . From 1801 to 1822, during which the Concordat of 1801 was in force, the diocese was temporarily incorporated into the Archdiocese of Aix . Between 1852 and 1893, the new cathedral Sainte Marie Majeure was built in neo-Byzantine style next to the old bishop's church . It has two domed towers and a 16 meter high crossing dome.
In 1948 the elevation to the immediate archdiocese took place; 2002 the survey of the metropolitan bishopric with seven suffragan seats .
