Ecclesiastical Province of Lyon

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lyon ( Latin Archidioecesis Lugdunensis , French archidiocèse de Lyon ) is a in the east of France located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church . The diocese based in Lyon was founded in the 2nd century and has had metropolitan status since the 3rd century .

history

The Archdiocese of Lyon was the first to be established in the three Roman provinces of Gaul . Through the bull Antiqua sanctorum patrum (1079), the Archbishop of Lyon was raised to Primate of Gaul by Pope Gregory VII . Linked to this was the sovereignty over the archbishopric of Rouen , Tours and Sens .

Until the French Revolution, suffragan seats were the dioceses of Autun , Chalon , Dijon (from 1731), Langres , Mâcon and Saint-Claude (from 1742).

In 1801 the ecclesiastical province was expanded to include the archdioceses of Vienne and Embrun , which were dissolved in the course of the Concordat , with the suffragan dioceses of Mende , Grenoble and Chambéry . In addition, the archdiocese was expanded to include the repealed dioceses of Belley and Macon.

In 1822 the diocese of Mende and the title of the ecclesiastical province of Embrun were transferred to the archbishopric of Aix and the archbishopric of Lyon was renamed "Lyon-Vienne". The restituted diocese of Belley was ceded. Suffragan seats are now the dioceses of Autun, Dijon, Grenoble , Langres and Saint-Claude.

The re-establishment of the diocese of Saint-Etienne took place in 1970 when it was separated from the archdiocese of Lyon. Since then, this has included the Loire department and large parts of the Rhône department .

Since 2002 the ecclesiastical province of Lyon has been divided into the Archdiocese of Lyon and the dioceses of Annecy , Belley-Ars , Chambéry , Grenoble-Vienne, Saint-Étienne , Valence and Viviers .

A criminal case against the incumbent Archbishop of Lyon, Cardinal Philippe Barbarin , the incumbent local bishop of Also , Archbishop Maurice Gardes and the acting Bishop of Nevers , Thierry Brac de la Perriere , for covering up sexual abuse was opened in Lyon on 7 January of 2019. Although the prosecution did not request a conviction, Barbarin was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with probation. The court referred to a not yet lapsed cover-up case in 2014. Barbarin laid appeal against the judgment. Referring to the presumption of innocence , Pope Francis refused the resignation offered by Barbarin herself on March 19, 2019 and left him in office. The chairman of the French Bishops' Conference , Georges Pontier , expressed surprise at the papal decision, which led to an unprecedented situation. On June 24, 2019, the Pope appointed Michel Marie Jacques Dubost CIM an Apostolic Administrator sede plena ; from that day onwards, Barbarin's jurisdiction was suspended. Only after Barbarin's acquittal in professional proceedings did the Pope accept his resignation on March 6, 2020. Bishop Dubost was appointed Apostolic Administrator sede vacante until the appointment of a new Archbishop .
