Antiqua sanctorum patrum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the Papal Bull Antiqua sanctorum patrum of April 20, 1079, Pope Gregory VII carried out a restructuring of the Catholic Church in France .

New foundations and awards

The previous diocese of Lyon was elevated to an archbishopric with this bull , and the ecclesiastical provinces of Rouen , Tours and Sens were assigned to it . The first archbishop who received the honorary title " Primate of Gaul " at the same time as this bull was Saint Jubin (also: St. Gebuinus or Gébuin), who had held the office of Bishop of Lyon since 1077 . The Archbishop of Sens had this additional title since 955, but since there had been disagreements between the Pope and the Archbishop of Sens at the Synod of Lyon, the Pope decided to intervene drastically with this bull.

Investiture dispute

In protest against the Pope, some bishops in France who had sided with Emperor Henry did not come to the Synod in Lyon. Therefore, with this bull, Pope Gregory VII also intended to swear the French episcopate to his line in the investiture dispute .
