The Diocese of Nancy-Toul ( Latin Dioecesis Nanceiensis-Tullensis , French Diocèse de Nancy et de Toul ), also sometimes simply diocese Nancy called, is one in France situated Roman Catholic diocese in the territory of the department Meurthe-et-Moselle .

history

Since the 4th century , the areas around Nancy and Toul belonged to the Diocese of Toul and thus formed part of the Trois-Évêchés , Suffragandiocese of the Archdiocese of Trier .

With a papal bull erected on November 19, 1777 Pope Pius VI. the dioceses of Nancy and Saint-Dié and Toul were reduced accordingly.

In the Concordat of 1801 between the Holy See and the First French Republic and with the papal Bull Qui Christi Domini issued for its execution, the dioceses of Saint-Dié, Toul and Verdun were incorporated into the diocese of Nancy with effect from November 29, 1802, which now comprised three departments: Meurthe , Meuse and Vosges . The latter two were separated in 1822 and the dioceses of Saint-Dié and Verdun were restored. With this concordat, the dioceses were also released from the ecclesiastical province of Trier and incorporated into the French diocesan system and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Besançon as a suffragan diocese.

Under Pope Leo XII. the two dioceses of Toul and Nancy were merged to form the diocese of Nancy-Toul on February 20, 1824.
