Church province of Clermont

The Archdiocese of Clermont ( Latin : Archidioecesis Claromontana ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in France that was raised to an archbishopric on December 16, 2002 and whose territory extends over the Puy-de-Dôme department . The bishopric is located in the city of Clermont-Ferrand .

history

There have been bishops in Clermont since the 4th century . St. Stremonius is considered the first bishop . The late antique bishop Sidonius Apollinaris is known , whose surviving writings give a good insight into the conditions in Gaul .

In 1095 the Synod of Clermont took place under Pope Urban II . At the last meeting of this synod, on November 28th, Urban called for the first crusade in front of 13 archbishops, 315 bishops, and abbots and a large number of nobles and common people . In 1248 the construction of the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption (Assumption of the Virgin) cathedral began. In 1317 the diocese of Saint-Flour was split off from the diocese. In 1630, King Ludwig XIII decided. in the "Edict of Troyes" (First Unification Edict) the amalgamation of Clairmont (spelling at that time) with Montferrand , the 1731 by Louis XV. (Second Unification Edict) was confirmed. By the Concordat of 1801 which was Diocese of Le Puy dissolved and its territory the diocese of Clermont slammed , but in 1822 rebuilt . On December 16, 2002, Clermont was elevated to an archdiocese and metropolitan seat by being released from its suffragan position under the Archdiocese of Bourges .

The current bishop has been François Kalist since his appointment in 2016 .
