The diocese of Soissons, Laon and Saint-Quentin ( Latin Dioecesis Suessionensis, Laudunensis et Sanquintinensis , French Diocèse de Soissons, Laon et Saint-Quentin ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in France. It essentially extends over the area of the Aisne department . The seat of the diocese is the city of Soissons . Episcopal church is the cathedral Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais (Gervasius and Protasius).

history

The diocese of Soissons was created at the beginning of the 4th century as a diocese in Augusta Suessionum ( Soissons ), which later became the capital of the Frankish Empire of Soissons , which - like other dioceses in capital cities - held a special position in the church hierarchy from the beginning .

After the French Revolution , the Soissons diocese was re-established as a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Paris by the Concordat of 1801 , but was assigned to the Archdiocese of Reims in 1822 .

statistics

At the end of 2010, 548,017 inhabitants lived on the territory of the diocese. Of these, 397,187 (72.5%) were Catholics who received pastoral care in 43 parishes .
