The French diocese of Saint-Dié ( Latin Dioecesis Sancti Deodati , French Diocèse de Saint-Dié ) was established in 1777, in the late period of the Ancien Régime . For this purpose, the collegiate monastery was converted into a cathedral chapter , the collegiate church was elevated to a cathedral and this diocese was founded in remote areas of the diocese of Toul . It belonged to the church province of Trier . After the diocese came to Nancy through the Concordat of 1801 , it was rebuilt on October 6, 1822, and it was now subordinate to the Archdiocese of Besançon as a suffragan . Since 1944 the bishopric and ordinariate have been in Epinal , the capital of the department, but no new cathedral was built there.
