The fire brigade flight service Lower Saxony (FFD) is an institution of the Landesfeuerwehrverband Niedersachsen e. V. (LFV-NDS) for forest fire monitoring and fighting.

organization

The flight service is subordinate to the Lower Saxony Fire Brigade Association, which uses the “Fire Brigade Flight Service” working group to coordinate. The fire brigade flight service is headed by the officer for the fire brigade flight service and, if he is unable to do so, by a deputy. The speaker and his representative are appointed by the LFV board.

The advisor for the fire brigade flight service is also the chairman of the working group "fire brigade flight service". A base manager is employed at each base. Several pilots and aerial observers are available to each base manager.

Pilots and aerial observers are active members of a fire brigade , whereby the aerial observers must have at least been trained as train drivers .

The activity in the fire brigade flight service is voluntary. The members of the Lower Saxony Fire Brigade Air Service perform their duties on a voluntary basis and free of charge.

In addition, forest officials who are temporarily seconded by the forest administration and trained as aerial observers fly with all missions.

The fire brigade flight service orders are issued by the responsible police headquarters.

Range of use

In addition to the early detection of forest and wild fires, one of the main tasks is to support operations management on earth with detailed situation reports from the air. As a “flying eye”, the fire brigade flight service transmits mission-critical information about the course of a fire and coordinates the emergency services on the ground in the area of operation.

In 2010, flights were completed on a total of 41 operational days. 60 fires were discovered and 37 fire engines were instructed in use.

history

The facility was founded in Fallersleben in 1962 . At the beginning, the two locations Peine and Lüneburg were operated, in 1989 the location Damme was added.

At the end of 2007 the fleet was modernized. The former machines of the type Cessna 182 in Lüneburg (D-ELRP) and Peine (D-ECJG) as well as the Cessna 172 D-EBAG in Damme were decommissioned and sold. The new model that has been flown since 2008 is the Cessna 206 , of which two machines have been purchased. The Damme base has remained without an aircraft since it was decommissioned.

A new machine was stationed at the Lüneburg (D-ENDS) and Peine-Eddesse (D-EFVP) bases. After the Peine-Eddesse airfield was closed in April 2010, the D-EFVP aircraft was relocated to Hildesheim airfield .

Aircraft and bases

The fire brigade air service currently has two modern Cessna 206 aircraft in use. The aircraft are equipped with BOS radio and GPS devices for satellite navigation .

After the old aircraft was decommissioned in 2007, the Damme site remained without an aircraft. In 2016, the political decision was made to close the Damme base.

Thus, the following two active locations of the fire brigade flight service remain:
