Philippe Xavier Christian Ignace Marie Cardinal Barbarin (born October 17, 1950 in Rabat , Morocco ) is Archbishop Emeritus of Lyon and former Primate of Gaul .

Life

Philippe Barbarin studied philosophy and Catholic theology at various universities in Paris . He holds a licentiate in theology and is a doctor of philosophy. He received the sacrament of ordination on December 17, 1977 and was ordained vicar in Alfortville and Vincennes for the next eight years . From 1985 to 1990 he worked as a pastor and teacher in Saint-Maur . At the same time he performed the task of the diocesan commissioner for questions of ecumenism . From 1991 to 1994 he was pastor in Boissy-Saint-Léger , from 1994 to 1998 he taught at the seminary of Fianarantsoa in Madagascar and at the same time performed pastoral duties as priest Fidei donum .

On 1 October 1998 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the Bishop of the Diocese of Moulins . Bishop ordained , he was on 22 November of the same year by Philibert Randriambololona , Archbishop of Fianarantsoa in Madagascar. In September 2012, Cardinal Barbarin made a statement regarding the planned opening of marriage in France to same-sex couples, he warned of a dam break should marriage also be opened to homosexual couples. Trial, conviction and acquittal

Informed by the abuse victim Alexandre Hezez, Barbarin had tacitly retired the priest Bernard Preynat on instructions from the Vatican. In 2016, Barbarin said among other things: "Thank God most cases are statute-barred." He had been criticized for not having resolutely pursued several cases of sexual abuse by the priest Preynat in his area of ​​responsibility in the past . The State Secretary for Victims, Juliette Méadel, called for his resignation . Members of the victims' association La Parole Libérée (The Liberated Word) had filed a lawsuit. The association listed 72 cases of abuse by Preynat, who was sentenced to five years in prison on March 16, 2020 for his actions. The judgment is not yet final.

Before a court in Lyon, Barbarin, two bishops and three employees were accused of failing to forward a report of the abuse of minors by Preynat to the authorities. The main hearing against Barbarin and Archbishop Maurice Gardès and Bishop Thierry Brac de la Perrière opened on January 7, 2019. The prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , Luis Ladaria , refused to obey his summons as a witness, citing his diplomatic immunity . The verdict was announced on March 7, 2019. Although the public prosecutor had not requested a conviction, Barbarin was sentenced to a six-month suspended prison sentence by the Lyon tribunal correctionnel. The court referred to a not yet lapsed cover-up case in 2014. Barbarin lay vocation one. At the same time, he offered Pope Francis his resignation . With reference to the presumption of innocence , the Pope rejected Barbarin's resignation and left him in office. The chairman of the French Bishops' Conference , Georges Pontier , expressed surprise at the papal decision. This leads to an unprecedented situation. On June 24, 2019, the Pope appointed Michel Marie Jacques Dubost CIM, an Apostolic Administrator sede plena for the Archdiocese of Lyon, which suspended Barbarin's jurisdiction with immediate effect. On appeal, Philippe Barbarin was acquitted in January 2020 of the allegation of not reporting sexual assault, after the public prosecutor had already requested the acquittal: The 69-year-old could not be personally liable for “errors” of the Catholic Church.

One month after the acquittal, on March 6, 2020, Pope Francis finally accepted Cardinal Barbarin's resignation.
