Luis Francisco Cardinal Ladaria Ferrer SJ , usual: Luis Ladaria , (born April 19, 1944 in Manacor , Mallorca , Spain ) is a Cardinal Curia of the Catholic Church and Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith .

Life

Luis Ladaria first studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid . On 17 October 1966 he joined the Congregation of the Jesuits in. Afterwards, Ladaria was sent to the Pontifical University of Comillas in Madrid and to the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main to study philosophy and Catholic theology . On July 29, 1973, Luis Ladaria received the sacrament of ordination .

1975 Ladaria was at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome for a doctor of theology doctorate . From 1975 he was Professor of Dogmatics at the Pontifical University of Comillas and from 1984 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. His main areas of teaching and research are Christology and Theological Anthropology . From 1986 to 1994 Luis Ladaria was Vice Rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University.

From 1992 to 1997 he was a member of the International Theological Commission . Since 1995 Ladaria has been a consultor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . In 2004 he was appointed General Secretary of the International Theological Commission by Pope John Paul II to succeed the later Cardinal Georges Cottier .

On July 9, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Thibica and ordered him to succeed Angelo Amato secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB on July 26, 2008 in the Lateran Basilica ; Co- consecrators were Cardinal William Joseph Levada , Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Bishop Vincenzo Paglia , Bishop of Terni-Narni-Amelia . Luis Ladaria was the first Jesuit to hold such an office in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. On September 21, 2013, he was permanently confirmed in office by Pope Francis.

On January 31, 2009, Luis Ladaria was also appointed Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity . On January 5, 2011 Benedict XVI appointed him. also consultor of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care in Health Care .

On July 1, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei , with which Ladaria replaced Gerhard Ludwig Müller . He was also appointed President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and the International Theological Commission . He headed the Ecclesia Dei Commission until it was dissolved in January 2019. On January 11, 2018, the Pope appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity .

In the consistory of June 28, 2018 Pope took Francis Ladaria as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonie Ignatius of Loyola in Campo Marzio in the College of Cardinals on. The occupation of his title diakonia took place on September 30 of the same year. On October 6, 2018, Pope Francis appointed Ladaria a member of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life . On June 6, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education . On July 8, 2019, the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life for five years . On November 11, 2019, the Pope appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture and on June 19, 2020, a member of the Pontifical Council for Legal Texts .

Criminal proceedings in Lyon

In 2018, Ladaria refused, on the grounds of his diplomatic immunity , to testify in a court case against the Archbishop of Lyon, Philippe Barbarin , who was accused of covering up a case of sexual abuse . The point is that this was supposedly done at the direction of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Barbarin is accused of having disregarded the criminal reporting obligation applicable in France in the event of sexual abuse. After Ladaria's refusal to comply with the summons , the start of the trial was postponed until January 2019. Although the prosecutor had not requested a conviction, Barbarin was sentenced on March 7, 2019 to a six-month prison term with probation. The court referred to a not yet statute-barred violation of the applicable criminal notification obligation in 2014. A judgment against Ladaria, who was accused of inciting not to report criminal offenses, was not possible because of his absence, the other five co-defendants were each acquitted .
