Georges Marie Martin Cardinal Cottier OP (born April 25, 1922 in Carouge , Canton of Geneva , Switzerland ; †  March 31, 2016 in Vatican City ) was a Swiss religious , theologian and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He belonged to the Dominican order and was a "theologian of the papal house" for many years.

Life

Georges Cottier studied literature from 1944 at the University of Geneva . In 1945 he entered the Dominican order , studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Freiburg im Üechtland and at the Angelicum in Rome, and received the sacrament of ordination in 1951 . He received his doctorate with a dissertation on the atheism of the young Marx and his Hegelian roots. He was professor of Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Geneva and Professor of Systematic Philosophy at the University of Friborg . At the Angelicum he later became dean of the Faculty of Canon Law. He was visiting professor at the University of Montreal , the Institut Catholique de Paris , the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan and the University of Padua .

He was theological expert at the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). He then worked as an advisor to the then secretariat for non-believers, headed by Franz Cardinal König , at conferences all over the world. He later headed the Center dominicain in Geneva . In 1986 Pope John Paul II brought him to the International Theological Commission , which was part of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ; from 1989 to 2003 he was its general secretary. In 1990 he led the fasting retreat for the Pope and the Curia . Cottier was editor of Nova et Vetera magazine and headed the Vatican Organizing Committee for the Holy Year 2000 .

From 1990 to 2003 Cottier also took on the role of theologian of the papal household . In this function he checked papal sermons and documents for their exact correspondence with Catholic teaching. After his age-related resignation, the London-born Dominican father Wojciech Giertych, who was born in Poland, was received by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed new papal house theologian . Georges Cottier was one of Pope John Paul II's closest theological collaborators. He wrote numerous sermons, addresses and other texts for him.

For his many services to the Catholic Faith, Pope John Paul II accepted him on October 21, 2003 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Santi Domenico e Sisto in the college of cardinals . Cottier was over 80 years old and therefore had no right to vote in the next conclave; such a cardinal elevation is considered a personal distinction by the Pope. Shortly before the elevation to the cardinal status , Cottier had been appointed titular archbishop of Tullia and had received episcopal ordination on October 20, 2003 by the Archbishop of Vienna Christoph Cardinal Schönborn OP .

In the consistory of June 12, 2014, Pope Francis raised him from the status of cardinal deacon to the status of cardinal priest .
