Pontifical Council for the Laws

The Pontifical Council for the Legal Texts ( Latin : Pontificium Consilium de Legum Textibus ) was established by the Motu Proprio Recognito Iuris Canonici Codice John Paul II of January 2, 1984. The Council is responsible for the interpretation of the Codex Iuris Canonici in particular .

history

Today's council has existed in a slightly modified form since 1917. Pope Benedict XV. Established on September 15, 1917 through the Motu Proprio Cum iuris canonici the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of Legal Texts , which was responsible for the interpretation of the CIC promulgated on May 27, 1917 .

On July 11, 1967, Paul VI created the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of the Laws of the Second Vatican Council . The Pontifical Council for Legal Texts continued its work from 1984 onwards.

tasks

The tasks of this Pontifical Council are:

  • Interpretation of the legal texts of the Church, especially the authentic interpretation of the universal Church laws, confirmed by papal authority
  • Assistance to the other dicasteries in drafting general implementing decrees and instructions in accordance with the applicable legal provisions
  • Review of the general decrees of the Episcopal Conferences from a legal point of view
  • Decision on whether particular laws and general decrees by legislators below the highest authority are in accordance with the laws of the whole Church or not
  • other tasks due to a special commission by the Pope.
