Rosalio José Castillo Lara
Rosalio José Cardinal Castillo Lara SDB (born September 4, 1922 in San Casimiro, Venezuela , † October 16, 2007 in Caracas , Venezuela) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . As President of the Vatican City Governorate , he was Prime Minister of the Vatican City from 1990 to 1997 .
Life
Rosalio Lara came from a Catholic family and, after finishing school, joined the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco . He studied philosophy and Catholic theology . In 1949 he was ordained a priest by his uncle, Archbishop Lucas Guillermo Castillo Hernández . In the following year he worked in the management of the Lyceum of Los Teques before he was sent to Rome for further studies , where he received his doctorate in 1953 in the field of canon law . After returning to his home country, he was elected President of the Association of Catholic Educators.
From 1954 to 1957 he was professor of canon law at the Salesian College in Turin , from 1957 to 1965 at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome. In 1962 a work and research assignment took him to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1971 the General Chapter of the Salesians elected him to be plenipotentiary for youth pastoral care.
On March 26, 1973, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Praecausa and ordered him to Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Trujillo . He received his episcopal consecration on May 24, 1973, José Cardinal Quintero Parra , Archbishop of Caracas ; Co- consecrators were Francisco José Iturriza Guillén SDB, Bishop of Coro , and José León Rojas Chaparro , Bishop of Trujillo.
In 1975 he was again summoned to Rome to work as secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the Codex Iuris Canonici . Rosalio Lara became a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of the Decrees of the Second Vatican Council .
In 1981 Pope John Paul II appointed him President of the Disciplinary Commission of the Roman Curia , a year later he entrusted him with managerial tasks in the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the Codex Iuris Canonici and appointed him titular Archbishop . When the Pontifical Commission for the Authentic Interpretation of the Codex Iuris Canonici was set up in 1984, the Pope appointed him its first President.
Rosalio Lara belonged since May 25, 1985 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Nostra Signora di Coromoto in St John of God to the College of Cardinals on. From 1989 to 1995 he was responsible for the administrative management of the papal budget, from 1990 to 1997 he was president of the Pontifical Commission for the State of the Vatican City . The cardinal was not allowed to take part in the 2005 conclave for reasons of age; at this point he had already exceeded the age limit of 80 years. He lived in Caracas until his death.
Together with the Venezuelan Bishops' Conference , Castillo caused serious diplomatic resentment with the state government in early 2006 by complaining about persecution of dissenters. During a pilgrimage, the cardinal criticized the leadership style of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez , speaking of "signs of dictatorship " and an unacceptable human rights situation . Chavez then spoke of a co-conspiracy of the Church and demanded an apology.
