The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Caracas ( lat. : Archidioecesis Caracensis or Archidioecesis Sancti Jacobi in Venezuela , span. : Arquidiócesis de Caracas ) is one in Venezuela situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Caracas .
history
The Archdiocese of Caracas was established on June 21, 1531 by Pope Clement VII with the Apostolic Constitution Pro Excellenti Praeminentia as the diocese of Coro and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan . On February 12, 1546, the diocese of Coro was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo as a suffragan. The diocese of Coro was renamed the Diocese of Caracas on June 20, 1637 . In 1715 the diocese of Caracas gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Curaçao . On February 16, 1778, the diocese of Caracas gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the diocese of Mérida .
The diocese of Caracas was raised to an archbishopric on November 27, 1803 by Pope Pius VII with the Apostolic Constitution In universalis Ecclesiae regimine . On March 7, 1863, the Archdiocese of Caracas gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Calabozo . Further territories were ceded on October 12, 1922 to found the diocese of Valencia en Venezuela , on June 21, 1958 to found the diocese of Maracay , on July 23, 1965 to found the diocese of Los Teques and on April 15, 1970 to found the diocese of La Guaira .
The Archbishop of Caracas is also the primate of Venezuela. Since the creation of a cardinal by José Quintero Parra in 1961, all archbishops of Caracas have been created cardinals , so that Caracas is traditionally a bishopric with a cardinal dignity.
