The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santo Domingo ( Latin Archidioecesis Sancti Dominici , Spanish Arquidiócesis de Santo Domingo ) is a in the Dominican Republic situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Santo Domingo .

history

The Archdiocese of Santo Domingo was established on August 8, 1511 by Pope Julius II with the papal bull Romanus pontifex as the diocese of Santo Domingo . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan . The diocese of Santo Domingo gave on December 18, 1534 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Guatemala .

On February 12, 1546 the diocese of Santo Domingo was by Pope Paul III. elevated to an archbishopric with the papal bull Super universas orbis ecclesiae . The dioceses of Comayagua , Coro , San Juan de Puerto Rico and Santiago de Cuba were subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo as suffragan dioceses. In 1795 the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo was dissolved as a result of the Peace of Basel .

On November 16, 1816, the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo was re-established by Pope Pius VII with the papal bull Divini praeceptis . In addition, the Archbishop of Santo Domingo was awarded the title of Primate of the West Indies . At that time, the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo comprised the entire island of Hispaniola . In 1848, the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo was stripped of its metropolitan status.
