Nicolás de Jesús Cardinal López Rodríguez (born October 31, 1936 in Barranca , Dominican Republic ) is a Dominican clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Santo Domingo .

Life

Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary of Santo Domingo . He was ordained a priest on March 18, 1961 by the Bishop of La Vega , Francisco Panal Ramírez OFMCap , and then worked in the parish pastoral care . At the same time he continued his studies and was finally sent to Rome , where he specialized in pastoral sociology , social sciences and canon law . He then carried out various tasks in the administration of his home diocese of La Vega, before he was given the position of vicar general in 1970 to lead the administration.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 16, 1978 first Bishop of San Francisco de Macorís . The Archbishop of Santo Domingo, Octavio Antonio Cardinal Beras Rojas , donated him episcopal ordination on February 25 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of La Vega, Juan Antonio Flores Santana , and Auxiliary Bishop Jesús María de Jesús Moya from Santiago de los Caballeros .

On November 15, 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Santo Domingo . On April 4, 1982 he was also appointed military bishop of the Dominican Republic . From 1984 to 2002 he was chairman of the Dominican Bishops' Conference . In recognition of his diverse academic and pastoral achievements, Lopéz Rodríguez received numerous awards. He holds several honorary doctorates and has been awarded the Great Cross of Isabella the Catholic . Pope John Paul II accepted him in June 1991 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Pio X alla Balduina in the college of cardinals .

He participated in the 2005 and 2013 conclaves .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation from the office of Archbishop of Santo Domingo on July 4, 2016. On January 2, 2017, his resignation as military bishop of the Dominican Republic was also accepted.

Positions

Nicolás de Jesús Cardinal López Rodríguez became known in the last years of his term of office for his homophobic attitude. When the openly gay Wally Brewster took office as the new US ambassador to the Dominican Republic in 2013 , López Rodríguez commented on this with the words "Are we going from fagots and lesbians to chickens?" In December 2015, he mocked Brewster again by saying that this should “focus on his housework” because he was “married to a man as a wife”. Brewster had previously criticized corruption in the Dominican Republic.
