Attilio Nicora
Attilio Cardinal Nicora (born March 16, 1937 in Varese ; † April 22, 2017 in Rome ) was an Italian canon lawyer and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Attilio Nicora graduated from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan in 1959 . He then entered the seminary of the diocese of Milan and studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the University of Milan . On June 27, 1964, he received the sacrament of ordination by the Archbishop of Milan , Giovanni Umberto Colombo . At the Pontifical Lombard Seminary in Rome , he completed a degree in canon law; at the Pontifical Gregorian University he received his doctorate after studying canon law . Nicora was then the professor of canon law and general canon law at the seminary called of Milan, where he and 1970 rain board.
Pope Paul VI appointed him on April 16, 1977 titular bishop of Furnos Minor and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Milan. The episcopal ordination donated to him on May 28 of the same year Giovanni Umberto Cardinal Colombo; Co- consecrators were Bernardo Citterio , auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Milan, and Giulio Oggioni , bishop of Bergamo . From 1997 he was active in the Curia and, among other things, Italy's representative at the European Commission of Bishops for questions relating to the European Community . In addition, he was the head of law at the Presidium of the Italian Bishops' Conference. He was considered an expert on the complicated legal issues between the Republic of Italy and the Vatican and in 1984 he was the “architect” of the reorganization of the Italian Concordat. Archbishop Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini also appointed Nicora Pro-Vicar General of the Diocese of Milan.
On October 21, 2003 he was appointed cardinal by Pope John Paul II with the rank of cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry of San Filippo Neri in Eurosia . On June 12, 2014, Pope Francis elevated him to cardinal priesthood.
In 2002 Nicora became President of the Apostolic See's Property Administration (APSA). Associated with this was his elevation to " Archbishop ad personam " . In 2011 he resigned as President of the APSA and was replaced by Pope Benedict XVI. on January 19, 2011 as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the newly created Vatican Financial Supervisory Authority AIF ( Autorità d'informazione finanziaria ). appointed. Nicora was significantly involved in the reorganization of the Vatican economic and financial sector and in the implementation of measures in the area of combating money laundering and in the dialogue with international institutions. Pope Francis released him from the office of President of the AIF on January 30, 2014 at his request and appointed Curia Bishop Giorgio Corbellini as interim president. In January 2015, Pope Francis appointed him to one of eight members of a new Vatican body that is supposed to accelerate abuse proceedings at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Cardinal Nicora was papal legate for the Basilica of San Francesco and Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli , both in Assisi , until his death . For many years he was involved in the Pontifical Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation .
