Ersilio Cardinal Tonini (born July 20, 1914 in Centovera di San Giorgio Piacentino , Province of Piacenza , Italy , † July 28, 2013 in Ravenna ) was Archbishop of Ravenna- Cervia . In 1994 he was promoted to cardinal .

Life

Ersilio Tonini was born the third of five children to a wage farmer. After theological and philosophical studies he received the sacrament of ordination in 1937 and was appointed sub-rain of the seminary of Piacenza . He then studied from 1939 to 1943 canon law and civil law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome . After returning to his home diocese, he worked as a teacher of Latin , ancient Greek and Italian and was the spiritual director of Catholic student groups. From 1947 he acted as editor of the diocesan newspaper and dealt increasingly with socio-political issues. In 1953 his bishop appointed him parish priest in Salsomaggiore , where he established the "Don Bosco Oratory". In 1968 he was transferred again to Piacenza, where he was responsible for the seminary as Regens for a year .

In 1969 Pope Paul VI appointed him . as Bishop of Macerata and Tolentino and as Papal Administrator of Treia , Cingoli and Recanati . He was ordained bishop on June 2, 1969 by Archbishop Umberto Malchiodi , assisted by Agostino Casaroli and Carlo Colombo . In 1975 Tonini became Archbishop of Ravenna and administrator of the Diocese of Cervia , which was amalgamated in 1986. Here he had difficult work to convince, as there was strong opposition in his new diocese to the church itself and the resolutions of the Second Vatican Council in particular. He succeeded in gaining the trust of the people of his diocese through a lived testimony of faith, which did not shy away from unusual measures. So he gave up the magnificent palace of the archbishop and from then on lived in a care center for the seriously ill and addicted patients. He was looking for the public and became known throughout Italy through numerous television appearances, during which he did not evade even uncomfortable questions.

At the end of his pontificate , Pope Paul VI commissioned him. in 1978 with the management of the NEI publishing house, which is responsible for the publication of the church newspaper "Avvenire". In the same year, Archbishop Tonini was able to reopen the seminary of Ravenna. He initiated numerous initiatives to proclaim the faith, founded a church radio station and revived the diocese newspaper. Under Ersilio Tonini, the attitudes of the people of his diocese changed, who for many years had been permeated by a noticeable anti-clericalism that had led to many painful conflicts between practicing Catholics and non-Catholics. In 1987 the Archbishop intervened against restrictive anti-employee measures by textile entrepreneurs and implemented a socially acceptable solution. In addition, he founded a movement that campaigns for the support of agricultural workers in Brazil . After his release as diocesan bishop in 1990, Tonini worked despite his advanced age in pastoral care as well as a philosophy teacher, retreat leader and journalist.

In 1991 Pope John Paul II commissioned him to lead the retreat for the Roman Curia . In the same year, the retired archbishop played a major role in the making of the film "The Ten Commandments". Since 1994 he has been a member of the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santissimo Redentore a Valmelaina . Cardinal Tonini, who is known to be media-savvy, found it particularly important to establish contact with the youth. Tonini died a week after his 99th birthday in a Catholic old people's home in Ravenna.
