history
The diocese was founded on January 16, 1978 by Pope Paul VI. with the Papal Bull Aptiora in this from cessions of territory of the dioceses of La Vega and Santiago de los Caballeros and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo as a suffragan . On February 14, 1994, the diocese of San Francisco de Macorís was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros as a suffragan.
