The diocese of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia en Higüey ( Latin : Dioecesis A Domina Nostra vulgo de la Altagracia in Higüey, seu Higueyensis , Spanish : Diócesis de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia en Higüey ) is a Roman Catholic located in the Dominican Republic Diocese based in the Marian pilgrimage site of Higüey .

history

The diocese was founded on April 1, 1959 by Pope John XXIII. erected with the papal bull Solemne est nobis from cession of territory of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo and subordinated to this as a suffragan . On February 1, 1997, the Diocese of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia en Higüey gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of San Pedro de Macorís .
