Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros
The Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros ( lat. : Archidioecesis Sancti Jacobi Equitum , span. : Arquidiócesis de Santiago de los Caballeros ) is in the Dominican Republic situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Santiago de los Caballeros .
history
The Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros was founded on September 25, 1953 by Pope Pius XII. established with the papal bull Si magna et excelsa from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo as the diocese of Santiago de los Caballeros . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo as a suffragan . The diocese of Santiago de los Caballeros gave up on January 16, 1978 parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Mao-Monte Cristi and San Francisco de Macorís .
On February 14, 1994, the diocese of Santiago de los Caballeros was raised to an archbishopric by Pope John Paul II with the papal bull Solicitam sane curam . The Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros gave up on December 16, 1996 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Puerto Plata . Another assignment of territory took place on February 1, 1997 to establish the diocese of San Pedro de Macorís .
