The largest diocese, Santo Domingo, has 4,566,088 Catholics. It is followed by the Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros with 1,023,000 and the Diocese of La Vega with 748,000 Catholics.

Octavio Antonio Cardinal Beras Rojas , Archbishop of Santo Domingo, was founded in 1976 by Pope Paul VI. appointed first cardinal of the Dominican Republic. Pope John Paul II visited the Dominican Republic in 1979, 1984 and 1992.
