Octavio Antonio Cardinal Beras Rojas (born November 16, 1906 in Seibo , Dominican Republic , † December 1, 1990 in Santo Domingo ) was Archbishop of Santo Domingo .

Life

After studying philosophical and theological studies in Santo Domingo and Rome, Octavio Antonio Beras Rojas received the sacrament of ordination on August 13, 1933 . He then worked as a parish chaplain in his home diocese for two years. In the years 1935 to 1945 he was in charge of the publication of the church gazette and the church newspaper of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo. He also worked for a Catholic radio station and founded a Catholic youth association. In the forties he also took over the management of the ecclesiastical court and served as a pastor at the episcopal church.

On May 2, 1945 Pope Pius XII appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Euchaitae and Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo with the right of succession. He was ordained episcopate on August 12th of the same year by the Archbishop of San Cristóbal de la Habana , Manuel Arteaga y Betancourt ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Camagüey , Enrique Pérez Serantes , and the Bishop of Ponce , Aloysius Joseph Willinger CSsR .

With the death of Archbishop Ricardo Pittini Piussi SDB on December 10, 1961, Octavio Antonio Beras Rojas succeeded him as Archbishop of Santo Domingo. From December 8, 1962, he also performed the task of military bishop for the Dominican Republic .

He took part in the first three sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

Pope Paul VI accepted him in 1976 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Sisto in the college of cardinals . He took part in the two conclaves in August and October of 1978.

On November 15, 1981, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. On April 4 of the following year, he also gave up the post of military bishop.

Octavio Antonio Beras Rojas died on December 1, 1990 in Santo Domingo and was buried in the local cathedral .
