It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo as a suffragan . On April 25, 1793, the diocese gave parts of its territory establishing the diocese of Louisiana and two Floridas . Further territorial assignments took place on February 20, 1903 to establish the dioceses of Pinar del Río and Cienfuegos . The diocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana gave up on December 10, 1912 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Matanzas .
