The Archdiocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana was founded on September 10, 1787 by Pope Pius VI. from the cession of territory by the diocese of Santiago de Cuba as the diocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo as a suffragan . On April 25, 1793, the diocese gave parts of its territory establishing the diocese of Louisiana and two Floridas . Further territorial assignments took place on February 20, 1903 to establish the dioceses of Pinar del Río and Cienfuegos . The diocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana gave up on December 10, 1912 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Matanzas .

The diocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana was founded on January 6, 1925 by Pope Pius XI. with the Apostolic Constitution Inter praecipuas raised to the archbishopric.

The archbishopric is the sponsor of the Félix Varela Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Padre Félix Varela) , which was opened in 2011, and is a church-based study facility that is also open to laypeople and is based in Old Havana . A prominent project of the cultural center is the quarterly magazine Espacio Laical , which is devoted to topics of social renewal, also takes up political debates from different points of view, but unlike the other media published in Cuba is not subject to the censorship of the Communist Party of Cuba .
