The diocese of Holguín ( Latin Dioecesis Holguinensis , Spanish Diócesis de Holguín ) with its seat in Holguín belongs together with the Cuban dioceses Guantánamo-Baracoa and Santísimo Salvador de Bayamo y Manzanillo to the Roman Catholic church province of Santiago de Cuba .
Pope John Paul II established the diocese on January 8, 1979 and at the same time appointed Héctor Luis Lucas Peña Gómez as the first bishop, whose resignation due to reasons of age was Pope Benedict XVI. accepted on November 14, 2005. He is succeeded by Emilio Aranguren Echeverría , who was previously Bishop of Cienfuegos .
