The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba ( latin Archidioecesis Sancti Jacobi in Cuba , Spanish Arquidiócesis de Santiago de Cuba ) is an on Cuba situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Santiago de Cuba .
history
The Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba was established in 1518 by Pope Leo X. with the Apostolic Constitution Super specula from cession of territory from the Diocese of Santo Domingo as the Diocese of Baracoa and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan . The diocese of Baracoa was renamed the Diocese of Santiago de Cuba on April 28, 1522 . In 1527 the territory of the dissolved diocese Concepción de la Vega was annexed to the diocese of Santiago de Cuba . The diocese of Santiago de Cuba was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo as a suffragan on February 12, 1546. On September 10, 1787, the diocese of Santiago de Cuba gave up parts of its territory to establish the diocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana .
The diocese of Santiago de Cuba was raised to an archbishopric on November 24, 1803 by Pope Pius VII with the Apostolic Constitution In universalis Ecclesiae regimine . On December 10, 1912, the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Camagüey . Another assignment of territory took place on January 8, 1979 to establish the Holguín diocese . The Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba announced on December 9, 1995 parts of its territory to the founding of the Apostolic Constitution Venerable Brother erected diocese Santísimo Salvador de Bayamo y Manzanillo from. Another transfer of territory on 24 January 1998 founding of the Apostolic Constitution Spirituali christifidelium erected Diocese of Guantanamo-Baracoa .
