location

Paffrath is located in the northwest of the city and approx. 15 km east of Cologne on the 51st parallel. The earlier smaller settlements and hamlets such as Nussbaum, Torringen, Büchel, Kamp, Flora have merged due to the heavy development in the 1960s and 1970s.

The “ Paffrath Mulde ” is a term among geologists that gives evidence of animal and vegetable fossils. In the Middle Ages , potteries were located in Paffrath , which produced the so-called "Paffrath goods" (cf. gray goods ).

history

The village of Paffrath emerged from an early medieval settlement that was founded by the Cologne Cathedral Chapter as the owner of the land. Since forest had to be cleared to create the settlement and the work was organized by the Cologne clergy , the new settlement was called "Paffrath" (= clearing of the clergy ). The center of the village formed the Fronhof, to which the various feudal estates were subordinate, as well as the Romanesque fortified church of St. Clemens , which was built around 1150. Paffrath is first mentioned in a document in 1160. While the municipality of Paffrath, to which Hand and Katterbach also belonged, with its large number of scattered and swarm settlements had a total of 641 inhabitants in 134 residential buildings in 1797, only 42 people lived in the village itself around 1850.

Attractions

St. Clement's Church in Paffrath
  • In addition to the few remaining half-timbered houses, the Romanesque parish church of St. Clemens is characteristic of the site. Due to a lack of space, the old Romanesque fortified church was extended by an extension from 1908 to 1911. This turned the old church into the north aisle. St. Clemens was able to maintain the character of the fortified church through the almost completely preserved wall and the elevated location.
  • The moated castle Haus Blegge , former knight seat Blech.
  • The Paffrath Mill .
