Herkenrath is a district of Bergisch Gladbach and belongs to statistical district 4 of the city under No. 41.

History and population development

The first written evidence in which Herkenrath is mentioned comes from 1163/1164 from the Codex Thioderici. Herkenrath is named next to Bensberg as a parish. The naming of a parish allows the conclusion that there were peasant settlements there, if not there was even a manorial rule. The first written testimony that gives an insight into the ownership situation dates from around 1224, when Dietrich von Dorndorf transferred the church in Herkenrath to the Order of St. John . Herkenrath belonged to the Porz office from 1363 . Until 1975, Herkenrath was a district of Bensberg.

In 1773 Herkenrath had 290, 1846 900 and 1910 2057 inhabitants (of which 2028 were Catholic and 29 Protestant). On December 31, 2014, Herkenrath had a total of 3756 inhabitants (including 283 foreigners). With 852 inhabitants (including 27 foreigners), the over 65 age group outweighed the age group under 18 with only 610 (including 37 foreigners).

Mining

The Romans probably already mined in the area around Herkenrath. In many places certain traces point to medieval mining. From the middle of the 19th century, Herkenrath was considered a center for industrial mining. Around the place there were several larger mines that gave work to hundreds of miners. Particularly noteworthy are the Blücher , Washington , Georg Forster , Berzelius , Weiß and Apfel pits .

Churches and institutions

The Roman Catholic church and parish is called St. Antonius Abbas . There is a parish association in Lerbach-Strunde , to which the parishes of St. Josef in Heidkamp , St. Antonius Abbas in Herkenrath, St. John the Baptist in Herrenstrunden and St. Severin in Sand are affiliated. Since the beginning of the 1970s there has been an evangelical community center in the Herkenrath / Dürscheid parish. This belongs to the Evangelical Church Community of Bensberg and consists of the villages of Herkenrath, Dürscheid , Immekeppel and parts of Moitzfeld .

Herkenrath has three kindergartens, a primary school, a secondary school and a grammar school .

traffic

The main traffic axis of Herkenrath is the state road 289, which crosses the town in a north-south direction and is called Braunsberg in the town . Herkenrath is connected to the bus network of the Rhein-Sieg transport association. The crossing and end point is the Ball stop at the Herkenrath high school. There is also a weekend night bus.

Culture

Under the heading of local history and folk things in Herkenrath , H. Jakob Schmitz also reports in an article in the Rheinisch-Bergisch calendar about the annual parish fair , known as a fair . For Herkenrath, the special thing about it is that it is called the “ceiling-bunne-fair” ( big beans - fair ). It bears its name because it takes place in the first week of July, when the broad beans are ripe. The name blanket bunne is also a nickname for the Herkenrather. These terms are still popular today for the fair and as a nickname. Regularly is in Herkenrath Rosenmontagszug under the motto "For us Pänz" organized (for our children).
