Herrenstrunden is a district of Bergisch Gladbach and belongs to the statistical district 3 of the city under No. 32.

location

Herrenstrunden is located almost in the north-east of the Bergisch Gladbach urban area at the beginning of the Strundet valley in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . The name is derived from the "Lords of Strune", the gentlemen of the Order of St. John , who owned a commandery on the Strunde (also Strunder Bach) .

History and sights

The former Maltese mill is now only used for residential purposes

The townscape of Herrenstrunden is mainly characterized by the former Commandery of the Johanniter (now called the Maltese Commandery ) and the old Johanniterkirche. The commandery at the source of the Strunderbach was first mentioned in a document in 1300 under the name "Strune". The Commandery was built before 1294. The Johanniter gained increasing influence through numerous foundations and a continuous expansion of the land. 1328 the Commandery has been to Ballei levied. In 1803 the property of the Johanniter, who called themselves Maltese since 1530, fell victim to secularization . The current Komtur building is a reconstruction of a building from the 16th and 17th centuries that burned down completely at the end of the Second World War . The new building was erected in 1950. Today the commandery is privately owned and houses a hotel and a restaurant.

The Maltesermühle on the Strunde , which is also privately owned , also belonged to the former commandery grounds . The church belonging to the commandery was completed in 1345. It is consecrated to the patron saint of the Order of St. John the Baptist . The first renovation took place in 1555. In the 19th century the church became the parish church of the parish of Herrenstrunden , to which the localities of Altehufe, Eikamp and Schallemich, which are now part of the Odenthal parish , were attached. Since the church was soon too small for the new parish, it was expanded in 1904 to include a transept built in neo-Gothic style and a choir . In 1911 the old part of the church was given a wooden barrel vault instead of a flat ceiling. Further renovation and restoration work took place in the 1980s and 1990s. The stained glass windows of the choir, which were made in 1904 by Reuter and Reichard in Cologne, are particularly worth seeing. They show scenes from the life of John the Baptist, namely from left to right the visit of the Virgin Mary in Elizabeth , the mother of John, the beheading of John the Baptist, and finally the baptism of Jesus by John in the Jordan . A window in the old part of the church reflects its original appearance before the neo-Gothic extension.

The formerly contiguous commandery area is cut through by the main connecting road from Bergisch Gladbach to Kürten , which opens up the Strundetal .

Other sights are the Zweiffel Castle and the old outdoor swimming pool, the entrance area of which is a listed building. However, the latter is no longer in operation and houses a restaurant.

Mills on the round

Of the numerous mills on the Strunde that used its water power, the Maltesermühle , the Igeler Mühle , and the four powder mills from Gut Schiff were in Herrenstrunden .

Mining and lime kiln

Mining has been practiced throughout the Strundetal for centuries. In many places you can also see former quarries where the limestone for the lime kilns was quarried. Here and there you can still find old lime kilns.
